Residential solar pricing in the United States is quoted by system size, equipment, roof complexity, and labor. The federal solar investment tax credit reduces eligible cost. State and utility programs vary. Payback depends on your utility rate, usage, and whether a battery is part of the design. Better Homes walks through a quote you already have — or helps you get one you can trust.
What a recent electricity bill tells an installer
Contractors usually ask to see a recent utility bill because it shows three things: average monthly usage in kilowatt-hours, used to size the system; your current rate and total spend, used to estimate savings; and the account and service information needed for interconnection paperwork when the system is connected to the grid. You do not need to send the bill to start — have it nearby for the call.
Federal tax credit, state programs, and financing
The federal solar investment tax credit applies to eligible system cost, including some batteries when they are installed with the array. State rebates, utility credits, and net-metering rules are local — what a neighbor in another state was offered does not transfer. Financing can make the monthly number look small while the total cost is not. Ask every quote to show cash price, financed price, assumed incentives, and estimated production.
Payback is not a single national number
Payback moves with how much power you use, what you pay per kilowatt-hour, whether a battery is in the design, and how long the roof underneath will last. Installing panels on a roof that needs replacement in a few years resets the clock — and the invoice. If the roof is near the end of its life, replace it first, then size the array.

Questions
Solar cost questions homeowners ask
Pricing, tax credit, financing, and how payback actually works.
What happens after I submit the form?
You'll pick a day and time that works for you, and Better Homes calls you then. The first call is short — we confirm the details of your project and what you're trying to get done, then line up the right contractor for it.
How long does the process take?
About a minute. It's a few quick questions about your home and project, then your contact details and preferred call time.
Is there any cost or obligation?
No. There is no charge to submit the form or to talk with us, and nothing is booked or ordered on that call. You decide whether to move forward afterwards.
Do I need to own the home?
Yes — roofing and solar decisions need the property owner's sign-off, so we ask homeowners to be the ones getting in touch. If you rent, the owner is welcome to reach out.
What happens to my information?
We use it to contact you about your project and to connect you with a contractor who serves your area. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
What if I miss the call?
We'll try again and follow up with the contact details you gave us, so you don't have to start over.
Do you work nationwide?
Yes. Better Homes matches homeowners across the United States with contractors who already serve that area.
Should I replace my roof before installing solar?
Usually yes if the roof is near the end of its life. We walk through that on the call so you do not install panels on a roof that will need to come off.
How much does a new roof or home solar cost?
It depends on size, material, roof condition, and your state incentives. The call is how you get a comparable number instead of three mismatched quotes.
